Tennis Elbow

What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis) is a common condition that causes pain on the outer side of the elbow due to irritation or overload of the forearm tendons.

It is typically caused by repetitive use of the wrist extensor muscles, especially the Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis (ECRB).

Despite the name, Tennis Elbow affects not only athletes but also people who:

  • Work on computers

  • Perform manual work

  • Lift weights

  • Use repetitive gripping movements

Symptoms of Tennis Elbow

You may be experiencing Tennis Elbow if you notice:

  • Pain on the outside of the elbow

  • Pain radiating down the forearm

  • Weak grip strength

  • Pain when:

    • Lifting objects

    • Turning a doorknob

    • Holding a cup or phone

  • Discomfort during repetitive wrist movements

Common Causes

Tennis Elbow is usually due to overuse and micro-tearing of the tendon.

High-risk activities include:

  • Tennis, badminton, gym training

  • Repetitive mouse and keyboard use

  • Trades (builders, electricians, painters)

  • Lifting or carrying heavy objects

Contributing factors:

  • Poor posture (especially shoulder + wrist mechanics)

  • Weak shoulder stability

  • Tight forearm muscles

  • Lack of recovery between activities
