Facet Joint Syndrome

Facet Joint Syndrome

What is Facet Joint Syndrome?

Facet Joint Syndrome is a condition caused by irritation, inflammation, or degeneration of the facet joints in the spine. These small joints connect each vertebra and help guide and control spinal movement. When they become irritated or worn, they can become a significant source of neck or back pain.

Understanding the Facet Joints

Facet joints are located at the back of the spine on both sides of each vertebra. They are synovial joints, meaning they contain fluid and cartilage to allow smooth movement. Their main roles are to:

  • Support spinal stability
  • Control bending and twisting
  • Prevent excessive movement

Healthy facet joints are essential for comfortable and pain-free movement.

Common Causes

Facet Joint Syndrome may develop due to:

  • Age-related wear and tear (osteoarthritis)
  • Poor posture
  • Repetitive strain or overuse
  • Heavy lifting or physical labour
  • Prolonged sitting
  • Sports injuries or accidents
  • Muscle imbalance and weakness

Over time, these factors can increase stress on the joints and lead to inflammation.

Signs and Symptoms

People with Facet Joint Syndrome may experience:

  • Localised neck or back pain
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning
  • Pain when bending backwards or twisting
  • Pain that worsens with prolonged standing or sitting
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Referred pain to the shoulders, hips, or buttocks (rarely below the knee or elbow)

Unlike nerve-related pain, facet joint pain usually does not cause numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.

How is it Diagnosed?

Diagnosis is usually based on:

  • Clinical assessment; Neck extension or Back extension
  • Postural and movement analysis
  • Physical examination
  • Medical imaging (X-ray, CT, or MRI if required)
  • Diagnostic injections in some cases

A thorough assessment helps rule out other conditions such as disc herniation or nerve compression.
